WNED|WBFO was awarded a Ready To Learn grant from The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of Ready To Learn is to support math and English literacy to children ages 2-8 in targeted communities through PBS station education and outreach departments. CPB and PBS have partnered with math experts and digital content developers to launch the PBS KIDS Lab which contains over 125 math-based learning activities, games, videos and classroom lesson plans for educators working with children in Pre-K through Grade 3. All activities within the Lab are aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards for math.
By partnering with the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood and Read to Succeed Buffalo, WNED|WBFO was able to make the PBS KIDS Lab content available to all Pre-K through Grade 3 classrooms at the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood Children’s Academy, Westminster Community Charter School and Highgate Heights Elementary School. A 20-unit iPad Mobile Learning Lab was purchased for use at these schools. Teachers used Lab activities in conjunction with their existing math curriculum. Read to Succeed Buffalo staff within each building supplemented the project by providing literacy based outreach support targeting math content and reading comprehension.
