Position: Managing Editor, Great Lakes Regional Journalism Collaborative
Location: WNED | WBFO, Buffalo, NY

Position Summary

WNED | WBFO, Buffalo, WXXI, Rochester, and ideastream, Cleveland are seeking an experienced journalist to lead the Great Lakes Regional Journalism Collaboration, funded by a major grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Managing Editor is responsible for the editorial strategy and journalism of the collaboration and for the overall management of the project. This includes managing reporters at three stations and other staff to accomplish the objectives of the RJC and managing all components of the RJC.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the editorial focus of the RJC; design and execute all aspects of the editorial process;
  • Oversee management of the RJC to ensure that all of the contractual requirements and deliverables are met with CPB, other funders and partners;
  • Develop a content and distribution strategy to include broadcast, online, digital, social media and community engagement;
  • Work with other public media outlets in the Great lakes region as resources for production of stories for the RJC and distribution of stories created by the RJC; work with national program partners to develop stories for national distribution;
  • Direct and coordinate the work of assigned reporters including training needs; coordinate closely with News Directors from the three stations on reporter and station schedules;
  • Works with reporters to develop stories, edit scripts and integrate audio components in ways to enhance storytelling quality and consistency;
  • Work with management of the RJC and stations to develop strategies and partnerships with community organizations and funders to ensure the sustainability of the RJC.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years professional journalism experience, with some management experience preferred
  • Experience as a reporter, editor or news director
  • Experience with broadcast reporting and editing as well as knowledge of digital, social media and community engagement
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to make solid news judgments and ensure application of high journalism standards
  • Ability to work in a collegial environment with partners, stakeholders and community groups
  • Minimum bachelor's degree required

Summary:

The Radio Producer/Reporter/Host serves as news producer for the Morning Edition shift on WBFO with responsibility for coordinating news coverage, writing news stories, delivering news stories as needed, setting up live interviews, and supporting the Morning Edition host. The position also serves as news reporter and as on-air news host as scheduled.

Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as news producer for Morning Edition including researching, writing and compiling news stories, scheduling live interviews, and supporting the Morning Edition Host/Anchor.
  1. Coordinate and update stories and feeds from overnight.
  1. Coordinate and update traffic, weather and other regular elements during Morning Edition.
  1. Provide real time feeds of news material to the web site and social media outlets.
  1. Serve as news reporter during other parts of the days.
  1. Serve as on-air host for assigned shifts.
  1. Prepare and update morning news stories for use during later shifts.
  1. Serve as back-up host for other shifts.

Qualifications

  • At least three years on-air broadcast news experience
  • Previous on-air hosting and reporting experience
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit news copy
  • Strong interviewing skills
  • College degree
  • Demonstrated ability to work under deadline pressure

                        Status: Part-Time, Exempt

Position Summary:                                                                                                                                                                                                               

The Director of Human Resources, in consultation with WNED|WBFO leadership, directs all activities pertaining to recruitment, staffing, termination, employee recognition, performance management/leadership development, employment policies, employee relations and compensation.

Essential Duties:                                                                                 

  1. Oversees recruitment activities for all categories of employees in consultation with the department managers and vice-presidents. Ensures EEO/FCC rules are followed and requirements are met. 
  1. Identifies, evaluates, recommends and implements training initiatives, wellness programs, annual award recognition programs, performance reviews, employee social events, and recruitment strategies.
  1. Evaluates and recommends modifications to existing benefits, compensation practices and employment policies and procedures development.
  1. Provides value-added professional human resource guidance to staff.  Presents recommendations and suggestions to management for resolving employee issues.

Other Duties:                                                                              

  • Oversees and directs the development and administration  of the Human Resources Department annual budget
  • Coordinates and hosts quarterly staff advisory committee meetings
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of Human Resource management
  • Maintains personnel files; is responsible for records of personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, payroll notices and job changes
  • Coordinates, in conjunction with Payroll & Benefits Administrator, open enrollment period

      5. Performs special assignments as directed by WNED|WBFO’s Leadership.

  7. Answering member correspondence (via email, letter or phone)
  8. Prepare and update PowerPoint presentations
  9. Serve as tally person support during radio pledge drive (as needed)
  10. Collect and track all department timesheets, leave requests, and sick leave forms.  Track time off for each employee. 
  11. Track purchase receipts, credit card reports and invoices.
  12. Schedule and track meetings for Senior Vice President & other Division Directors
  13. Attend and take minutes for department meetings (as requested)
  14. Assistance with Fundraising Event set-up (as needed)
  15. Maintain confidential donor files
  16. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education Required:

  • Detail-oriented, independent, organized, professional and discreet.
  • Ability to multi-task and learn new procedures swiftly.
  • Advanced-level experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong organization and problem-solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications abilities
  • Associate degree preferred
  • Minimum two years’ experience with skill set noted above.
