BUFFALO, N.Y. – Get the inside scoop on one of North America’s most popular tourist destinations from 26 people who actually live there. Enthusiastic residents of Niagara Falls, Ontario, volunteered to film some of the ‘points of pride’ of their hometown for WNED’s 16th community “video scrapbook” production. The resulting program, “Our Town: Niagara Falls, Canada,” premieres on WNED-TV Saturday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m.
The program showcases a town of more than 82,000 people nestled along the Canadian/U.S. border. The volunteer filmmakers capture exciting attractions, historic landmarks and natural wonders — along with unassuming favorites. Their video footage was edited and compiled into the “Our Town” program. The volunteers were also interviewed about the topics they covered and their commentary serves as the narration behind the program.
Segments feature churches, cemeteries, nightlife, the Maid of the Mist and the War of 1812.
Dan Frigault shares the rarely seen decommissioned hydro-electric buildings, built in the 1900s. Some of these historic landmarks are so well preserved that they are truly in a ‘museum state.’ In his segment on downtown revitalization, Dean Tedesco presents the views of both residents and visitors in this ‘world stage’ community. (See complete list of volunteers and their chosen topics below.)
Underwriting assistance for the production was provided by the Niagara Falls Tourism Visitor and Convention Bureau and Sedona Holistic Medical Centre. The City of Niagara Falls Mayor's Office and MacBain Community Centre provided production support.
While reinforcing hometown pride for residents, WNED’s “Our Town” series helps build awareness about regional gems in Western New York and Southern Ontario.
Since 2003, WNED has produced 15 “Our Town” programs, featuring Brantford, Kitchener/Waterloo, Markham, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Oakville, St. Catharines and Welland in Ontario, Canada. Clarence, Dunkirk/Fredonia, East Aurora, Ellicottville, Jamestown, Kenmore/Tonawanda, Lockport and Orchard Park were featured in Western New York. The series adopts the concept of “a day in the life” picture books, using video instead of photographs.
