DUNKIRK/FREDONIA IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH WNED’s OUR TOWN

Twenty-three residents of Southwest New York recently captured their region’s diverse treasures for WNED-TV’s 11th community “video scrapbook” production, Our Town: Dunkirk/Fredonia. The resulting production premieres on Monday, September 8 at 9 pm on WNED-TV.

The volunteer filmmakers videotaped specific topics of interest or unique town assets, including parks, historic sites and local artists. Their video footage was edited and compiled into the latest installment of the OUR TOWN television series. The volunteers also were interviewed about the topics they covered, and their commentary serves as the narration behind the program.

Our Town: Dunkirk/Fredonia showcases a region known in part as a college town; a lakeside retreat; a historic community; and a place of verdant farms and deep spirituality. Fredonia’s mayor, Mike Sullivan, shares the view outside his office windows―the historic town center, Barker Commons. Dick Gilman shows off the 1891 Fredonia Opera House, which he helped restore. Nin Privatera reveals the mysterious Grape Farm Village across the street from his home. Life at SUNY Fredonia is filmed by alumna Christina Wagner and her daughter, Hilda Myer, a current freshman. Other segments highlight the Underground Railroad, the Lily Dale spiritual community and much more.

Underwriting assistance for the Dunkirk/Fredonia production was provided by ECR International.

Since 2003, WNED has produced ten other OUR TOWN programs, featuring Kitchener/Waterloo, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Welland, Oakville and Markham in Ontario, Canada, and Jamestown, East Aurora, Kenmore/Tonawanda, Lockport, and Ellicottville in Western New York. The series adopts the concept of “a day in the life” picture books, using video instead of photographs.
