Avoid the Summer Slide with Reading Rainbow Stories

Launched in 1983, “Reading Rainbow” was the most-watched PBS television show in the classroom. Its groundbreaking approach to engagement, emphasis on the power of imagination, and ability to foster a love of reading in young learners earned the devotion of many, making it an immediate classroom staple and cultural icon.

This spring, WNED PBS presents a new twist on “Reading Rainbow” with the launch of Reading Rainbow Stories on PBS LearningMedia, the Reading Rainbow YouTube Channel, and readingrainbow.org. Experience new ways to inspire literacy with remastered segments of the original “Reading Rainbow” series and ignite imagination all by taking a look in some familiar books.

PBS LearningMedia is a free, open-access resource for educators who can access content for use in the classroom or anywhere. Currently, 21 Reading Rainbow Stories are offered which highlight elements and themes relatable to today’s young learners.  Each story is enriched by grade K-5 teaching tips and resources, as well as theme-based activities, discussion questions, art projects, writing prompts, and cross-curricular opportunities.

In addition to the resources for educators, family activities are available for parents and caregivers on www.readingrainbow.org and the collection can also be viewed on the Reading Rainbow YouTube Channel

Students can avoid “summer loss phenomena” while learning about the power of friendship from “Enemy Pie” or the importance of preserving heritage from “The Lotus Seed” as well as utilize resources that meet New York State Education standards.

“Reading Rainbow Stories continues the legacy of fostering the love of reading. The curriculum materials can give children a foundation for interacting with and understanding people of other cultures, as well as a foundation for later studies in science, history, and geography,” said Director of Learning and Engagement Beth Fronckowiak.

For more information, visit PBS LearningMediawww.readingrainbow.org, or the Reading Rainbow YouTube Channel today.

Funding for this programming was provided in part by the New York State Education Department.
