Kid Fest Offers Event for Families with Special Needs

Special evening planned with quiet spaces, less waiting, smaller crowd

New this year, WNED Kid Fest is now more accessible for all children! In partnership with The Children’s Guild Foundation Autism Center at Oishei Children’s Hospital, WNED-TV is hosting a Sensory Night tonight (Feb. 8) for families with autism, physical, and sensory challenges who could benefit from a supportive, quieter, and less-crowded environment. Individuals in wheelchairs or those who have ambulatory challenges will also find it easier to navigate Kid Fest Sensory Night.

Special accommodations offered for the Sensory Night include: capping attendance to reduce the crowds; featuring multiple PBS Kids characters to minimize waiting time; offering noise muffling headphones (also available Saturday and Sunday); and establishing a quiet space for families to take a break, if needed. Performances during this time will be interactive and engaging to families on the spectrum.

The event was promoted to families through the hospital, community organizations, schools, and parent groups that specialize in working with families with autism, and physical and developmental disabilities. Autism Spectrum Disorders affect 1 in 59 children and result in social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Many individuals on the spectrum have a difficult time in crowds, waiting in lines, and coping with loud and highly stimulating environments.

Kid Fest continues Saturday (Feb. 9) and Sunday (Feb. 10) at WNED studios. Families can meet Daniel Tiger, Katerina Kittycat, Super Why!, Princess Presto, and Clifford the Big Red Dog during the event. Participate in a variety of fun activities, earn prizes, and meet your favorite PBS Kids characters! In addition, organizations from around the community present live performances, crafts, and giveaways for those who attend. Complimentary goody bags will be given to each child while supplies last.
