The Last Dog Documentary to Air on WNED-TV
After losing a best friend in his dog, Peter Hagedoorn made the decision to never own another one. Now in his seventies, he’s fallen in love again with a Saint Bernard puppy named Hawthorn.
Hagedoorn’s instant love for the puppy alters his life and has complemented both him and his community. The documentary “The Last Dog” will air at 9 pm, Monday, May 13 on WNED-TV.
Hagedoorn lives in Listowel, a small town in Ontario, Canada. He is an artist and support worker, assisting people with special needs. His dog has just died and he decides that he will never own another canine – until a friend takes him to view a litter of Saint Bernard puppies. Hagedoorn falls in love with one, buys it on the spot, and names it Hawthorn.
His experiences in WWII internment in Japanese prison camps, civil war in Indonesia, refugee status in Australia, repatriation to the Netherlands, and immigration to Canada all have an influence on his status in his community. The documentary explores endings and beginnings, memory, aging, and renewal.
