WBFO Presents: It's a Wonderful Life-A Radio Play Production of BTPM | December 16
Buffalo Toronto Public Media and the theatre department of Niagara University are collaborating on this exciting radio-play drama to be performed live at BTPM’s downtown studio on December 16, 2023 and subsequently broadcast on WBFO during the holiday season. After much research, we chose the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” This 45-minute radio play tells the story of George Bailey, who has given up on his personal dreams to help others in his community.
The performance will include music, voice actors, and sound effects. As a creative nod to public broadcasting, satirical promotional announcements will be performed by BTPM staff members as “commercials” during the breaks in the show, just like they did with traditional radio dramas.
Audiences will be welcomed at two recorded performances.

This project brings back the “old-school” feel of a live radio play, complete with a studio audience, voice actors, and foley sound effects. Radio plays originated in the 1920s and rose to their peak popularity in the 1940s. Many households relied on their radios to get live news and entertainment rather than reading newspapers or novels. Today, with the growth in podcasting and the effects of COVID-19, radio plays are making a comeback. As WBFO looks to produce new original content and entertain our audiences, radio plays are an excellent opportunity to do so.
